The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
